Once you\u2019ve paid the\namount, which is typically around $50, you won\u2019t have to pay it again until\nyour plan renews on January 1<sup>st<\/sup>. To get the most out of your\nbenefits, utilize them while you\u2019ve already covered your deductible and aren\u2019t required\nto cover out-of-pocket fees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventive Dental Care (Checkups &amp; Cleanings)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most insurance plans reward patients that are proactive\nabout taking care of their oral health by covering the cost of preventive\ndental care. That\u2019s why the average policy covers two checkups and cleanings\nthroughout the year, which are encouraged to be scheduled six months apart. During\nthese appointments, your family dentist will examine the health of your teeth\nand gums and treat any small or lingering issues before they have a chance to progress.\nThis examination also includes an oral cancer screening and a thorough professional\ncleaning to remove any tartar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Yearly Maximum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to your deductible, your insurance company also\nprovides you with a yearly maximum. This is a capped amount of money that they\npay for all of your dental treatments within a 12-month period. The average maximum\nis between $1,000 and $1,500, which means that any cost of dental treatment you\nget that\u2019s below this will be lost on January 1<sup>st<\/sup>, and any amount over\nthis you\u2019ll need to pay out of your own pocket. To maximize your benefits, it\u2019s\nbest to either meet or exceed your yearly maximum. This way, you can rest\nassured that you\u2019re not losing hundreds of dollars every year that you could be\nusing on optimizing your oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">100-80-50 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The average insurance policy covers a higher amount of\ncertain dental treatments because they don\u2019t want patients to wait until the\nlast minute to seek care. This structure is called 100-80-50, meaning they pay\nfor 100 percent of preventive dental care, 80 percent of basic treatments like cavity\nfillings, and 50 percent of major procedures such as root canal therapy and\ntooth extractions. Basically, the sooner you get any oral health problems\naddressed, the less you\u2019ll need to pay out of your own pocket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 1<sup>st<\/sup>, your dental insurance policy will\nrestart, meaning that any of your unused benefits will be lost.
