It’s back-to-school season, and you know what that means – you’re about to get a whole lot busier. As you and your kids get ready for a calendar full of classwork and extracurriculars, it’s all too easy to forget about taking care of your teeth. It’s understandable, but at the same time, good dental health habits will help the whole family avoid cavities during the school year. So check out these four tips for keeping your smiles happy and healthy!
#1. Reinforce an Oral Hygiene Routine
That means encouraging your loved ones to brush their teeth twice per day, for two minutes each session, and to floss at least once daily. It might seem simple, but doing so has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other conditions caused by harmful oral bacteria. Plus, brushing and flossing will help everyone’s teeth look whiter and brighter!
#2. Pack Plenty of Vegetables
Vegetables usually aren’t a kid’s favorite snack, but try to remind them that just a few carrots or celery sticks can go a long way, especially when it comes to their dental health. Crunchy veggies stimulate saliva production, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria. The nutrients in many of these vegetables promote strong, healthy enamel, too.
#3. Stay Hydrated
Similarly, it’s hard for your body to maintain decent saliva levels when your mouth is dry. Making sure you and your family stays hydrated will empower everyone’s natural defenses. For some extra anti-bacteria action, try adding a salt water rinse to your daily oral hygiene routine.
#4. Schedule a Checkup & Cleaning
A checkup and cleaning appointment gives your dentist the opportunity to check for symptoms of oral health conditions, as well as remove stubborn plaque and tartar from your smile. It can be a good idea to schedule this type of visit before school starts; that way, if you or your child does have a cavity, your dentist can take care of it before tests and homework start piling up.
The back-to-school season can be hectic, but fortunately, many dental health tips are simple and don’t take too much time out of your day. Encourage your family to follow these four, and before you know it, your smiles will be ready for summer again!
